- Academic Advising
Students in Performing and Visual Arts are assigned a faculty advisor based on major, concentration, instrument, or studio area.
Your faculty advisor is a great resource for information about:
- Requirements for your major
- University policies and procedures
- Resources on campus
- Study skills and time management
- Strategies to improve your academic success
- Professional opportunities
It is important to meet with your faculty advisor at least once each semester to plan your schedule for the next semester and obtain your PIN for course registration. Schedule your advising appointment early to avoid delaying your registration.
You may also get advising help from the Student Services Coordinator for Performing and Visual Arts. Email StephanieM.Nielsen@unco.edu or call (970) 351-2930 to reach Stephanie.

Advising for New First-Year Students:
All new first-year students who have been admitted to a major in the College of Performing and Visual Arts will work with a faculty advisor as part of Freshman Orientation during the summer. You will learn about requirements for your major and what classes you need to take your first semester at this session.
Contact Orientation to make your reservation for Freshman Orientation!
Advising for Transfer and Non-Traditional Students:
All incoming transfer students are required to complete online orientation. Students will receive an email in their BearMail account from email@example.com within one week of being admitted to UNC.
After online orientation is completed, the next step is academic advising. Students in Performing and Visual Arts may be advised either in-person during a Transfer and Non-Traditional Welcome orientation session over the summer or via email.
Transfer and non-traditional students who wish to attend a Transfer and Non-Traditional Welcome and receive advising in person should make a reservation with Orientation.
Transfer and non-traditional students who are not able to attend a Transfer and Non-Traditional Welcome may receive advising by email.
To receive advising by email (only if you will not attend a Transfer and Non-Traditional Welcome), please email the following individual, based on your major:
Art and Design: Ken Price - Kenneth.Price@unco.edu
Music: Katie Runkel - Katherine.Runkel@unco.edu
Theatre and Musical Theatre: Dr. Anne Toewe - Anne.Toewe@unco.edu
If you email one of the individuals above and do not receive a response within one week, please email Stephanie Nielsen at StephanieM.Nielsen@unco.edu for additional support.
NOTE: If you are a Music, Theatre Arts, or Musical Theatre major, it is important to make sure you have been admitted to your desired program before seeking advising.Log in to your URSA account, click on the Student tab, and click on View Student Information to verify your major. If you see “XLA” or “University College” listed anywhere, you need to contact Academic Support and Advising to be advised. Contacting the wrong advisor may significantly delay the process.
