Summer Artist In Residence: Dylan Gebbia-Richards

Open Studio Hours:
Friday, July 7: 4:30-7pm
Tuesday, July 25:  5-7:30pm

UNC Galleries is proud to announce the summer residency of Boulder-based artist, Dylan Gebbia-Richards. Gebbia-Richards will set up working studios in the Arts Annex and Mariani Gallery. From early May through late August, the artist will create his largest, most ambitious site-specific installation to date. At the end of his residency, the finished product will be unveiled as the premier Fall 2017 exhibition in Mariani Gallery. Gebbia-Richards will construct a twenty-eight-by-eighteen-foot oval room within the gallery with sloped, wave-like walls. Modeled after a crashing wave, at no one point in the upward curve of the wall will the angular curves be the same as another point. The construction will completely encompass the viewer in a life-size, textured painting made from 4,080 pounds of melted wax and vibrant pigment. With their build-up of wax and pigment, Gebbia-Richards' sculptural installations oscillate between the artist's controlled technique and unpredictability.

The artist-in-residency model allows for community engagement throughout the construction process. Open Studio Hours are open to the public and provide an opportunity to visitors to meet the artist, ask questions about the work as its in process, and learn more about the Galleries at UNC. Each Open Studio precedes Music & Theatre Arts programming on campus. We encourage you to come for Open Studios and stay for Concerts Under the Stars and/or Little Theatre of the Rockies. Make it a summer evening of the Arts at UNC!
