Professional/Academic Experience

  • Keyboard Area Head and Associate Professor of Music, University of Northern Colorado’s School of Music
  • Guest professor at major conservatories in Asia
  • Chairman of the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation Keyboard Scholarships
  • Founder and Director of the Colorado International Piano Academy and Colorado Piano Festival, intensive summer piano programs that take place annually on the UNC Campus
  • Jury member of numerous national and international piano competitions, including the Cleveland International Piano Competition, Hong Kong International Music Competition, “Nuova Coppa Pianisti” International Piano Competition, China National Piano Competition, Mexico “Parnassus” Piano Competition, and MTNA State and Division Competitions

Publications/Creative Works

Dr. Weng has performed more than twenty piano concerti with orchestras across the U.S., Europe and Asia, including the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and China National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He has given solo recitals around the world including New York’s Carnegie Hall and Merkin Concert Hall, Chicago Culture Center, Vienna’s Peterskirche, London’s Royal College of Music, Singapore National University, China National Center for Performing Arts, and Taiwan National Concert Hall. He is frequently invited to perform and teach at such esteemed music festivals as Tanglewood Music Festival, Music Fest Perugia, TCU Cliburn Institute, Messiaen Festival, Rocky Ridge Music Center and Breckenridge Music Festival.

Honors and Awards

  • 2014 UNC “College of Performing and Visual Arts Scholar of the Year”
  • “Steinway Artist” award by the Steinway & Sons.
  • 2007 American Composers Forum’s Encore award for commissioned works by Patricio de Silva: Three Movements for Solo Piano.
  • Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation’s Presidential Award of Excellence

Student prizes and admission/placement:
My students have won top prizes at numerous regional, national, and international competitions, including the Bösendorfer/Schimmel USASU International Piano Competition, Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition, MTNA’s Colorado State and Division Competitions (2009-2010, 2012-2015), Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Competition, UNC’s Southard Competition (two times), and other major competitions in the region.

Graduates of my class have been admitted by such schools as Eastman School of Music, Juilliard School, University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, New York University, Peabody Institute, and University of Missouri. My past students have been offered teaching and administrative positions in the U.S., China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Brazil.
